For Parents...

Hello! If you're reading this, odds are that your son has probably told you he is rushing TRIANGLE. Most parents have two main concerns about fraternities: hazing and alcohol. First, TRIANGLE does NOT haze. We never have and we never will. You can read more about position on hazing here. As for alcohol use, we firmly believe in moderation. We have an alcohol free rush, since we'd rather judge prospectives by the integrity of their character than by the drunken foolishness seen in fraternity stereotypes. After joining the fraternity, a person is free to make their own choices regarding alcohol. Drinking has always been a non-issue for TRIANGLE, and we find that its not the fraternity's place to make that choice for someone. To drink or not to drink will always remain a personal choice.

After hazing and alcohol, many parents are concerned about the cost of joining a fraternity. Comparatively speaking, UMBC TRIANGLE is inexpensive. Our primary expenses are insurance and brotherhood events. Our chapter has consecutively won awards from our National Headquarters for our excellent financial planning. Dues last semester were just under $300, which included several brotherhood events including full dinners, national fees, liability insurance, among other things. To put this in perspective, the national average, not including housing costs, is over $1000. We work very hard to keep costs down while still providing great benefits to our members.

Finally, we are surprised to find that many parents are concerned that their son's grades will suffer in a fraternity. This couldn't be farther from the truth! We are proud to say that the greek community at UMBC maintains a higher GPA than the campus average. Triangle has the second highest GPA of all the greek organizations at UMBC, and the highest among fraternities, coming in at a 3.095. A benefit of joining TRIANGLE is that your son will be immersed in a community of people who have taken the same classes, had the same professors, and surmounted the same obstacles, and that is a tremendous help in the rigorous programs at UMBC.

The benefits of TRIANGLE are endless. We don't have a single member wo regrets their decision to join. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, etc..., please don't hesitate to contact us here. We sincerely hope you will encourage your son to join Triangle.
